  • State of the UrbanVerse (Personal Updates and more) – February 2023

State of the UrbanVerse (Personal Updates and more) – February 2023

My, my, how time flies.  Doesn’t seem like it’s been that long, but damn if it hasn’t been MONTHS since I last posted anything at all.  There’s definitely been some big events since I last updated everyone, and some big changes I’ve had to undertake, but I would like to think I’m finally starting to get myself back on track properly.

So, let’s start with a quick(ish) rundown of what all has been going on with me since July of last year when I last posted a story.

    2022 Flooding in Eastern Kentucky

Right around the end of July, my area of eastern Kentucky was hit by some of the worst flooding we’ve seen in my lifetime.  Some have called the event a ‘500 Year Flood’, and it was pretty damn scary for a lot of people.  While I was safe at my home during the rainfall, my family personally experienced it.  My mother and sister were visiting my mother’s boyfriend and his family and had to evacuate his home at about 3AM.  At the time, I was located a couple counties over, and had to receive updates via Facebook messenger from my mother that morning as the waters continued to rise, starting about 6AM.  They had moved their vehicles to the road, but still the waters continued to rise, and the roadway was blocked in both directions by trees and debris.  The water started getting up higher, and rose to within a few inches of the running boards of their trucks before thankfully it began to recede and they were not forced to try to climb up the hillside to get away from it.  It was about 10AM that our home lost power, so my communication was cut due to extremely poor cell service.  I ventured out after it was obvious that the power wasn’t coming back immediately.

It was then that my mother and sister decided to return home, though my sister wanted to stay at my aunt’s place, which was well out of the flood zone and still with power.  By the time I had come out of the holler, my mom was almost back home, so we decided to meet up at the local bank and take one vehicle to survey the damage.  We had originally intended to drive around and see some of the harder hit areas, but decided to head home first, but saw that the water was coming up far too quickly at that point.  By the time we tried to get back up the holler, the road was blocked near the entrance (the only spot that regularly gets impacted by flooding), so we had to turn around.  Within the few minutes it took us to try and get up the holler, the water was already rising into the streets of the small town at the mouth of it, which I had never seen before.  So, we returned to my aunt’s place, where I wound up spending about three nights, though we could return to our home the following day, it took multiple days for power to be restored.  I just kept the refrigerator and freezer running with a borrowed generator throughout those days.

I’m extremely grateful that my family remained safe and made it through, though her boyfriend and his family lost much of their belongings in this event, and are still trying to recover from it to this day.  To say it was a nightmare would be putting it mildly.

    Deaths in the Family

Our family suffered a couple deaths during the second half of the year as well.  First was my uncle’s wife, who had long been suffering from various issues relating to lupus and other conditions, in mid-October.  She had been forced to spend several days/weeks in the UK Medical Center in Lexington over the last few months, and did not make it out the last time she went there; initially it seemed like she would pull through, but then things took a turn for the worse and she never recovered.

Second was my mother’s boyfriend’s son-in-law; this one came out of nowhere in early November.  He had been dealing with diabetes, but seemed to have things mostly under control at this point.  He worked for the city, and had been working long hours trying to clean up the flood damage, driving a dump truck.  He suffered a bad wreck in late September or early October, which caused him to suffer ongoing pain.  However, unbeknownst to everyone, he would also become infected with flesh-eating bacteria, likely having come from all the filth that had come to be in and on the truck when he crashed.  He was suddenly unable to get up off the toilet one evening, and within a handful of days, he was dead.

Ongoing Vision Problems and Diabetes Complications

Even at the time of the flooding, I was having minor issues with my vision, as I had for some time, even before I quit my job in April of last year.  I had been suffering retinal bleeding, diabetic retinopathy, on and off for some time, even though I had (supposedly) been keeping my diabetes under control.  I tended to have one eye or the other cloudy due to this bleeding, so my vision was rarely great, and had received several injections into the eye to clear the buildup of blood, though throughout the spring and summer, I was mostly clear.

This changed in late September, when I suffered a bleed in my left eye that quickly became one of the worst I had experienced.  My sister and I had gone out to grab lunch, a sandwich and fries from Arby’s, and stopped at Walmart to pick up a few things before heading back home.  As I waited in line, several factors came together to cause the bleed:  1) they apparently had their AC off, because it was warm in the store, and warmer at the checkouts, 2) even though my sugar was okay that morning, I had foolishly decided to eat the bun and fries at Arby’s, which raised it to higher levels, though I thought I would be okay, and 3) my blood pressure spiked due to stupidity at the checkout (it took about fifteen minutes for the people in front of us to finish checking out because the Walmart staff couldn’t figure out how a coupon worked; it took FOUR people to finally figure it out).  So, when I crouched to pick up the cartons of soda we had stopped for, my left eye spurted, and it continued to get cloudier the rest of the day.

At first I didn’t think much of it, but after several days it hadn’t really begun to clear, and I had to see my retina specialist, where I received another series of injections to clear the blood.  However, unlike before, my eye would remain cloudy for several months, and I was basically operating with one eye through October and November.

It was in November, when we were attending a birthday party that I suffered a minor bleed in my right eye, which, thankfully didn’t remain long, but did get me understandably worried.  I couldn’t understand why it had happened, as I had been keeping my sugar under control (again, so I thought).  I was okay after a couple days, and did alright throughout the rest of November, but then I suffered another bleed in my right eye in early-mid December, while the left remained cloudy from the bleed in September.  This one was more severe, and I was unable to see much other than vague shapes at the time.  I was a bit scared, to say the least.

It was during the visit with my retina specialist over the latest bleed that the decision was made to perform surgery on my left eye to clear it out, while I received an injection in my right eye.  So, on December 15th, I underwent surgery to clear my left eye.

This was, to use an apt saying, an eye-opening experience.

I began to monitor my blood sugar levels more closely in the days following the surgery, while continuing my renewed research on what I could do to keep it under control.  I had discovered a channel on Youtube that seemed to offer the best advice that would work for me (it’s called Beat Diabetes, btw, and I highly recommend looking into what he has to say), but made some rather surprising discoveries about how my own body worked.  I began following the dietary guidelines (basically keto / low card with strict fasting, two meals a day only), but it was a rocky start.

As I would discover during this period, I am an atypical diabetic.  For most, coffee (black or with cream, no added sugars of course) and beans are safe and won’t spike blood sugar, with beans being considered a diabetic super food.  In my case, however, I discovered that BOTH of these actually spike my sugar!  At the time, I was checking my sugar five times daily, and at first couldn’t understand why it would be so high either several hours after dinner (mom had fixed chili right after my surgery, with plenty of beans in it) or by lunch time, when I had been on an 18 hour fast (aside from two cups of coffee in the morning).  Coffee in particular would spike my sugar 50+ points per cup!  Even caffeinated drinks would cause it to spike up.  Thinking back to my days in the office, I would have a couple of cups in the morning, after checking my sugar, and would then have another cup or two at work, plus a caffeinated beverage at lunch time, so it was no wonder my health was declining and I couldn’t get a handle on my sugar.

It was a difficult period in which I basically dropped coffee and caffeine pretty much cold turkey, but my blood sugar tests showed the changes immediately.  As the days went on, and throughout the holidays, my sugar levels would steadily decline.  I could handle teas fairly well as far as sugar spikes, and it would give me a little bit of a boost in the mornings.  After cutting out beans and pretty much all carbs, I actually began to experience low blood sugar for the first time, going low to the point I had to eat something sweet to get it back up, and had to cut back on my insulin injections.

As it stands right now, since I started in mid-December, I have lost about ten pounds at least (I had lost five within a month, between doctors visits, with almost no exercise), and my blood sugar is staying fairly steady in the 110-130 range most days, with it being slightly higher on days when I have vegetation (salads or some other kind of veggies).  Even on days when I have allowed myself to stray a bit (like having some of the refried beans with dinner at the Mexican restaurant), it is coming down faster, and isn’t staying high nearly as long as it used to.  I have only been taking insulin if it is over 150 at night, and even then have reduced my dosages.  I am still mystified as to why it will sometimes rise overnight through my fasting period, but thus far it hasn’t been a major issue.

The best part, though, is that I have (knock on wood) suffered no further bleeding in my eyes.  My left eye remains clear, and my right eye has only a few remnants floating about in my vision (basically just regular floaters at this point).  As March approaches (and my 40th birthday with it), I’m hopeful that I will continue to improve and may even reach the point where I can drop some of my medications completely.

    The Rocky Road Ahead

This year has already been crazier than last year, and I’m not even going to get into the state of national and international politics.  For those of you who may not have heard, there was a pretty massive shakeup in the tabletop RPG space in January when Wizards of the Coast decided to pull some serious bullshit regarding the Open Game License 1.0a.  The quick version is:  the OGL has been in place since WotC released D&D 3rd edition back in 2000, and has been the standard license practically everyone in the TTRPG scene has used since then to publish their games.  This license is what allowed so many games to come out using the d20 system, for example, and why the Old-School Renaissance became such a big part of the TTRPG space in recent years, and is why D&D 5e has exploded in popularity the last few years, with tons of third-party creators making content for it.  So, Hasbro/WotC decided that since they weren’t getting practically all the money, D&D was under-monetized and that needed to stop.  They tried to pull some shady business to revoke the OGL, a document which, according to the guy who was primarily responsible for creating it, was, by its nature, irrevocable, and force creators to use a new restrictive license that would give WotC the right to take your content for their own use, require you to report your earnings to WotC, and if you made enough money, give them 25% of what you earned.

Needless to say, this caused an uproar in the TTRPG space, and its aftershocks are still ongoing.  WotC is still making stupid decisions and cannot seem to just stop with their stupidity, and many of the bigger creators, such as Paizo and Kobold Press, are fighting back, either making a new OGL-like license that will be as ironclad as possible (and given over to a third party to control, so they can’t change it in the future) or creating their own game systems.

As it stands, my gaming group are finally diving into Pathfinder 2nd edition, and are dropping D&D 5e (a change that I have wanted for years; I disliked 5e even before it was the popular thing to do), and I’ve been delving into other systems and games as well, like Cyberpunk 2020/RED, Castles and Crusades, and different flavors of OSR games.

This has caused me some issues lately in terms of my writing progress, as I have been torn between wanting to develop my own gaming content (something I’ve done plenty of times before, only this time I’m feeling more invigorated to do it) and continuing to develop my UrbanVerse, which has multiple settings within it and thus my brain sometimes has trouble focusing in one area.  So, I’m going to try to find a balance to both, combining my RPG creation with my writing and worldbuilding efforts to some extent.  Before the OGL debacle, I had been trying to develop my own homebrew system based on the old Star Wars Saga Edition RPG, and that may continue, though it’s on hold for the moment due to learning Pathfinder 2e (I’m going to run the Abomination Vaults AP, starting with the Beginners Box adventure and mixing in Troubles in Otari as sidequests).  I’ve already got an idea in mind for a homebrew adventure/campaign setting that I’m probably going to be using for our eventual Castles & Crusades tryout as well that I’ve started working on.

I do, however have several stories, a couple fairly lengthy ones, that are done and ready to post, as well as some that are fairly close to being finished, if I can keep my brain focused on them.  I will say that some of my tastes have evolved over the last year, and I have tended to want to focus less on kink and more on serious fiction, though the kink still seems to find its way in there regularly.

Look for some new content coming up soon; I’m likely going to shoot for a post a week again, and may try to do a second post, gaming related, weekly as well, though we’ll see how this goes.  Though I’m not working at the moment, I’m likely going to be trying to find another job soon (eye surgery ain’t cheap!), and have also continued to try and develop my photography skills.  Plus, I’ve taken to ghost hunting again since last year, and have already been on three hunts, with several more already scheduled for the coming months.  I’ll probably be posting some details on those soonish as well, likely some video and audio evidence too.  It’s going to be a busy year, but I’m hopeful for good things!

  • Happy Easter, Updates, and Questions

Hey there everyone, hope you’ll be having a Happy Easter this weekend, and if you don’t celebrate that particular holiday, hope you have a good one anyway!

Due to the holiday and need for me to work on the lawn (its that time of year again after all), I’m not going to have an update on P5 this week.  However, that’s not the only reason I’m not doing an update.  It’s been a combination of factors the last couple of weeks, but the big ones are work related (having to go in and work two extra shifts in one week, one of them on the overnight shift without any sleep from the previous shift I’d worked that day), and interest related.  I’ve really not heard ANY feedback on the story so far.  I see a few of you who are consistently reading or at least faving the chapters on DA, but otherwise my view counts on the UrbanVerse have been down, and I’ve received ZERO comments (aside from my good friend and beta reader.  You know who you are, I think.  Thanks so much for everything!).

    Is it really that bad?

I’m curious…what is it?  Is it a lack of time due to the time of year?  Is it just that the story isn’t what you’re looking for?  If so, what about it don’t you like?  Too slow?  Not enough sexy stuff?  Don’t care for the setting?

Please, let me know your personal experience and thoughts here!  Ultimately, yeah, I’m writing these for my own enjoyment (certainly haven’t monetized anything or done a monthly subscriber thing), but I know I have a bit of an audience out there, and I’d appreciate if you’d let me know where I’m failing on this one, how I can improve and what would get you more interested in this story, or whether you’d rather I focus my attention elsewhere.

As it is, I’m experimenting with some live streams now, and will be seeing whether or not I can work these into my schedule regularly.  For the moment, it’s been me building Gunpla, and I’m probably going to start doing writing streams as well for a bit, if you’re curious about what’s coming up or how I flounder about in my word processor.  We’ll see how that goes; figure experimenting with something new is never a bad thing (unless it’s drugs; don’t do drugs kids).  Notifications will be coming up on my Discord channel, though I’ll try to branch out and post them up on DA when I have them as well.

Hope to hear from you soon!  Have a great weekend, y’all!

  • Moving Forward / What Story Ideas do YOU Want to See?

Now that the Haunted Asylum Misadventure has come to a close, I’m going to be shifting focus to another story, though I’m probably going to wait until after New Years to post the first chapter of it.  In the meantime I’m going to finally get up the next worldbuilding article on the City of a Thousand Delights.  I haven’t decided just yet what will posted after that, but I’m hoping I can complete a special story for Christmas weekend.  I’ll admit, the last couple weeks have been a bit hit or miss due to longer hours and a more chaotic schedule being that it’s December, but I’ve been trickling some words onto the page almost daily.  Definitely need to get back to what I was managing before.

With that in mind, I’m going to give you a bit of a preview of what’s coming down the pipeline, and then go over some ideas that I’m still working on, both for my stories and how I’ll be posting them going forward, and touch on some other ideas I’ve had knocking around.  Hoping you’ll offer your thoughts on what you think about my plans so that I can better focus my limited time on stuff that you’ll enjoy more!

    The Next Big Story

The Peculiar Predicament of the Pilfering Pink Pussy

Do you like superheroines?  Do you like superheroines in bondage and kinky situations?  Do you like alitteration?

Well, if so, then you should enjoy the next story coming up after the start of the new year!

Synopsis:  Six months ago, an unexplained wave of energy swept over the planet.  At first nothing seemed amiss, but then people started changing and developing super powers.  It didn’t take long for powerful criminals to show up and start abusing their newfound abilities, so it was inevitable that the heroes were hot on their heels.  In Sentinel City, the heroine known as Pink Pussy, one of the earliest heroines to appear in town, has fallen from grace, taking up a life of crime in a series of heists that the police just can’t get a handle on.  Detective Laura Conway has been assigned to the case, but she has other reasons for wanting Pink Pussy caught:  namely, she knows who Pink Pussy really is, and is desperate to figure out what has befallen the friend she’s not seen in weeks.  The case gets even more complicated when a new pair of heroines appears to stop a gang of heavily armed maids from robbing a jewelry store, calling themselves Cyber Seer and Mecha Musume, and it seems that Pink Pussy’s long-time rival for the affection of the fanbase, Shadow Lynx, knows more than she should about the case.  And who is the mysterious young woman who showed up out of nowhere at the crime scene flinging magical bondage spells?  Can Laura possibly sort through the mess and find her missing friend before she’s locked up for life?

My hope here is to have a weekly release as I did with the Asylum story, with previews going up on DeviantArt and the full chapters released here.  As I’ve been writing this one, the chapters are looking to be on the shorter, quicker to read side, but I think it fits with the overall quicker pace of the story I’m going for.  Going to be trying a few new things with my writing on this one, so hopefully it’ll turn out to be successful experiment!

Chains and Chastity RPG Campaign Setting

I’m hoping to make development of my fantasy RPG setting a bigger priority going forward as well.  It’s been slow going with that big 40+ hour gap in my week at the office, plus all the stuff I have to deal with at home, but now that my Call of Cthulhu game is winding down and I’m moving to a 5th Edition D&D campaign, this should be easier to manage.  This is the setting in which the in-progress “City of a Thousand Delights” series of articles is set.

Several years back, I had started developing some amount of content for a kinky RPG setting, and that was about the time that I stopped writing heavily and went mostly silent on Deviant Art.  That was originally for Pathfinder, but now that I’ve had a change of heart on D&D 5E, I’ll be developing the setting for it instead.  With the limited amount of time I have to play with these days, it’s a lot simpler working within the 5E rules than Pathfinder (v1; I’ve not delved into the newest version of it yet).

Hopefully I can keep things moving at a steady pace, ideally once a week, or bi-weekly at most, with updates to the setting, monster entries, NPCs, magic items, short stories, that kind of thing.  I’ve got a World Anvil account that I’ll be updating and trying to roll into the development as well, and eventually, if everything goes as intended, I’ll be able to start publishing some of the work I do for the setting. I may even try to DM a few online games if there is enough interest in doing so.

    Future Ideas

Here are a few rough ideas I’ve got baking; not all of these have been developed to the same degree, but I’m hoping you’ll find them interesting nonetheless.

The Adventures of Red and Sassy (Western Fantasy) (Title Pending)

This is another planned series of books, set on a planet within the same galaxy as Lila’s misadventures, and was once a dark-elf prison/laboratory, which was abandoned when the environmental/terraforming systems went wildly out of control.  The surviving prisoner population eventually reformed various societies across the world, though technology remains mysteriously unable to progress beyond that of the late 1800s.  Magic is still around, though, as are various monsters roaming the wilderness.

Red and Sassy are the planned main characters for these stories, Red being an idealistic young “sword sage” (temporary name, cause I suck at naming things, wielding both a katana and a revolver) looking for adventure, and Sassy a gunslinger of no meager talent looking to get rich.  As this is a fantasy setting, expect a mix of fantasy races and magical monsters, as well as some ancient technology from before the “Great Uproar” that can dramatically change the course of events when it’s utilized.

This will be another kinky series as well, so you can expect the same kind of erotic fun as you’re used to. 😉

    Post-Apocalyptic (Science Fiction)

This is probably the least well-developed idea at the moment, as it would be based mostly on some Fallout games I’ve played/ran in the past, along with some fiction I’ve written years ago.  Though inspired by the Fallout setting, I’m wanting to develop my own take on the post-apocalyptic future, though I’m not entirely sure exactly where that’s going to lead just yet. It may or may not be set on Earth, and is very possible that this is another planet within the same galaxy I’ve already used with Lila and friends.

Basically, I’m wanting to do something like a take on the Fallout formula, but in an apocalyptic future of the 80s instead of the 50s (exploring that whole retro-futurism / hauntology thing).  I’ve got some ideas I can pull out of some of the old Fallout RPGs that I could easily turn into some stories, and yes, they do involve bondage and other fetishes.

I’ve got a basic idea for a starter story at the moment, basically involving a wastelander woman getting sent to a kinky prison that trains pleasure slaves, and her only way out being to help the warden expand her business (adapting this from some unreleased Fallout fiction I started but never finished years back).  More to come on this idea later.

    Appalachian Horrors (Horror, Modern)

This is another planned series of tales involving a group of people in rural Appalachia who get involved in various supernatural happenings and must investigate what’s causing it while surviving various horrible monsters.  May involve some Lovecraftian elements, but is set in a modern (or fairly modern) setting.  As with most of my works, this is based on some previous tabletop games I’ve run, specifically a D20 Modern game, as well as my own experiences while ghost hunting a decade or so ago.  This series will probably will be more straight horror and not kinky, so it will likely be a side project, at least for the foreseeable future.

This could very well be a series of short stories involving various characters and events based on some of the things I’ve heard about over the years, and based off Appalachian folklore.  I could also turn it into at least one series of larger stories, based on the D20 Modern game I ran, which, while it never finished, I had a framework for and could extend out to full length.

    Ghost Girls Bound for Trouble

Now, that being said, I do have a bondage filled story about ghost hunting in mind, which could likewise become a series all its own.  Inspired by multiple personalities on Youtube who go to these supposedly haunted places and somehow always find creepy stuff or just seem to go there to get freaked out, this story idea involves a group of women who combine that with sex appeal, because who doesn’t like watching busty babes running in fright and buying their merch, eh?  In fact, I’m pretty sure that their group name is T.I.T.S., but I’m not sure if that actually means something or if that’s just the first letters of their names.

The opening story idea is actually more like if you mixed the click-baity kind of ghost hunting schtick with the ‘Flower & Snake’ (Hana to Hebi) series of films and even an anime.  If you’re not familiar with the idea, Google is just a click away ;). Basically, the girls are well established online already, and are filming their next episode at an old abandoned place when they hear some strange noises from the basement, and come upon some S&M play that is apparently being watched by a bunch of masked people.  They would book it out of there, but would be curious and aroused by what they witnessed, and eventually find their way into the show themselves.  Future stories would basically be them going into places and getting into various spooky/kinky situations thanks to the mysterious group.

    Making Money

So, for now, the primary distribution method for all of this stuff is through the Urban Verse website, though I’m hoping to monetize my work in some way; hosting ain’t free, and I’d love to get some alternate income sources going.  Patreon and SubscribeStar are probably the most likely options for starters, with perks including early viewing of stories and exclusive content only available there.  I’d love to get some of my stories on the Amazon Kindle library, but they’ve got some issues with the kind of content I produce, so I may have to do a webstore of some kind here, or find other distributors that are more inclined to erotic content.

The RPG content could most likely be handled through DriveThru RPG for most of it, as they do allow some amount of ‘adult’ content, though again, a webstore through my site would probably be the best option for the really kinky stuff. It could also be distributed through the monthly subscriber model.  Maybe a tier for stories, a tier for RPG content, and the highest tier for both.  I dunno; I’m pretty new at the whole thing, and I’ve not managed to work up a proper plan yet.

I’d like to try my hand at some commission work as well, but given my limited time as is, that doesn’t seem feasible at the moment. However, should I eventually get to this point, commissioned works would ideally involve a mix of my characters with other OCs; I tend not to like writing for characters in other established properties.  I had a payment scheme for these years ago when I first entertained the idea, based on a per-word rate, but only managed a single commission due to things generally becoming too hectic at the time. I may go for something like this again, or just have a special tier should I go with the monthly subscriber idea.  We’ll see as things develop.

    The Social Media Thing

Another thing I need to figure out is the whole social media thing.  I have accounts setup on a few different places, but I’ve not really used them for the intended purpose of getting my stuff out there.  It’s not something I’m particularly well versed at (I mean, I literally use my original Twitter account strictly for browsing porn, lol) but is something I’ll have to learn if I want to maximize my audience.  I’ll delve more into that as I have time, but if you’ve got any tips or suggestions, I’d love to hear them!

Also, if you want to check out what accounts I do have for the Urban Verse, you can check them out here:

    Twitter – @TheUrbanverse
    Gab – @UrbanVerseWrites
    MInds – @urbanversewrites

I do also have a live Discord server; you can hit me up there as I’ve pretty much always got discord turned on.  Check it out here: https://discord.gg/4q9tzBy

And there’s always my Deviant Art page – https://www.deviantart.com/urbansniper

That’s it for me today.  Hope you’ll stick around for the upcoming stories, and will let me know your thoughts on what I’ve proposed for the coming days.  Have a good one!

    See y’all next time!

  • Updates and Future Plans

Well, now that my birthday has passed (took last week off for a reason!) and the world’s done gone crazy, I suppose I should get another update on what’s been going on and what I’m planning going forward.

As far as my life, there’s been little in the way of change at work; I work for a local ISP, and we’re classified as a utility, so basically an essential service.  Great job security, but a bit worrying that I’m in the only office still admitting people for equipment exchange.  Given my position, it’s not feasible I join the work from home staff either, so it’s going to be very interesting to see how things develop in the next couple of weeks.

    On to better things, though.

As it stands right now, I’m continuing slow progress on writing, managed some decent progress on the long weekend I took last week but didn’t get anything done due to the crazy situation at work and pretty regularly getting home late. I took out today for the woods, hiking most of the day and avoiding most people; I’ve been anxiously awaiting spring weather and despite the cooler temps today, I had to get out and enjoy nature and take some pictures.

As to future plans, I hope to continue my weekly updates here and hope that I’ll be able to move to a twice a week update schedule once I get a plan on exactly what it is I’m going to be doing.  Right now I’m considering starting a series of short horror stories based on some of the photography I’ve done, specifically various abandoned places located around my hometown.  Don’t know why, but had the name “Humpday Horror” come to mind a few weeks back and thought it was a good idea.  Might be, I dunno, guess we’ll see.  And it’d give me a chance to show some of the pictures I’ve taken and never shared with anyone outside the Facebook crowd. What do you think, dear reader?

And yes, I realize I could probably do sexy short stories instead for much higher view counts, but that’s not necessarily what I would prefer to do right now.  I’m finally getting over my indecision on the science fantasy story I’m working on and actually including the sex and kinky stuff I wanted to, potential future censorship (looking at you, Amazon) be damned. There are certainly other paths to publishing these days, and I’m looking into them, but honestly, that’s still a lot further on down the road.

I know I do want to make this place a lot more active regardless, so whether it’s the horror shorts or weekly RPG game reports or whatever, I do intend to get something else going besides the once a week posts. Any thoughts about what you’d want to see here?  Certainly open to any and all suggestions!

Just a quickie today since it’s late and I’m sure I’m going to start feeling that hike sooner rather than later.

    Until next time, dear readers!

  • New Beginnings as I Struggle to Change Myself

Hey, everyone.  It’s been a while, and that’s completely my fault. This last year has been a struggle, mostly with myself, as I try to find some kind of balance in my life that I’m satisfied with.

Let me lay it out…I’m going to be 37 this year, and with that, there’s been a lot of baggage on my mind.  The big one is that my father and his brother both died in their mid-40s due to heart disease, so I’m wondering if that’s my fate as well.  Also, I am really disliking my current job.  I’ve been there for about 13 years now, and this last year has really gotten to me.  I can’t focus on my duties like I used to; I just keep feeling like I’m always wanting to be somewhere else, to say nothing of how much I’m dispising my immediate boss these days.  But, I’ve still got a truck to finish paying off, not to mention some pretty steep medical bills, so I really need to stay there at least another year.  The benefits are amazing, certainly, but the office environment has soured over the years.

I’ve certainly noticed some changes with myself in the last year or two as well.  I’ve struggled since my early teens to get my diabetes in check, and with this last year, I’ve made some of the best progress I ever have, thanks to some new medications, a new dieting plan, and regular exercise.  However, with that comes the constant struggle of keeping my sugar low while chained to a desk 8+ hours a day, five days a week.  I’ve never wanted to be out and about more than I have this past year.  I’ve been hiking to more places in Kentucky than I’ve ever been to before, and I’ve gone out exploring locally to places I’ve only ever heard of.  Plus, I’ve really gotten into photography since last May, absorbing everything I can learn, and have even purchased my second DSLR.  I’ve gone so much into it that I’ve really cut back my model building to about one kit a month if that.

Plus, I’ve been trying to find the energy to get back to writing regularly.  In the evenings, I come home and feel so mentally drained that I can barely stay awake most of the time; pretty much every evening I’ll wind up falling asleep in my desk chair for at least half an hour or so, or so near to sleep that I may as well be.  It’s frustrating to have to deal with that every evening but to complicate matters more, I still haven’t managed to kick my Youtube habit.  Might as well consider it an addiction… I can go a day or two without watching something, but always wind up falling back into the pattern of watching it all evening after I’ve recovered from my low energy period.  When I think of how much time I’ve wasted over the past decade on Youtube when I could have been writing, it saddens me.

To that end, I’ve been trying to replace Youtube with what I used to do before it came around: reading.  I’ve bought more books the past year than I have in a long time, probably since before high school, and have read several of them, just nowhere near as many as I wanted to.  I feel better when I read, my mind actually comes up with new ideas after I read some inspiring scene or take in a new setting.  I just don’t know why I can’t focus there and have to keep going back to that damn video stream… I can block that stuff, sure, but I’m so familiar with doing this kind of thing thanks to my IT job that I can just as easily undo it, so it’s not exactly the best solution.  There are options like the “Cold Turkey” blocker, but I’m not sure if that’d be any better than me just blocking it through my router/hosts file.  It might be a bit harder to get around, I suppose…

It just seems like there are so many different directions I’m wanting to go with my life right now that I can’t focus on any one direction for more than a handful of minutes at a time.  I have good days with writing, getting whole chapters done, but those are few and far between.  Likewise, when I read, it’s a chapter or two a night, but sometimes I’ll manage to get through half the book in a day; it just depends on how well I’m feeling after that mind-numbing, depressing day at the office.  I suppose it really comes down to dealing with that first, but finding another job in eastern Kentucky can be difficult, to say nothing of even trying to decide what it is I’d actually like to do.  Sure, writing full time is always going to be the ultimate dream, but realistically, there’s no way I could manage that right now and hope to make ends meet.

There is a word for what I need, though…discipline.  I need to crack down on myself in other areas and make myself do what I really want, Youtube dopamine addiction be damned.

Knowing what to do, and actually doing it, though, are vastly different things, of course.  Just another of life’s little challenges…

Thanks for taking the time to read my random thoughts.  If nothing else this is the most I’ve written all week, so I suppose I am making a little progress on the writing front.  I hope to actually make this a place where I can write regularly, whatever it may be, whether it’s my thoughts, snippets of fiction, worldbuilding, rants, whatever.  One of the most important things in writing is keeping yourself writing, so if I can just manage that…I’ll be off to a better than average start.

  • The Struggle Begins

And it is always a struggle to write, especially these days.  Seems like no matter what I do, I can’t find the time. So, in the coming months, the goal is to make the time, and hopefully this page will be a part of that.

Here I hope to keep track of not only the myriad characters, worlds, and stories currently bouncing around in my head, but also to just get some thoughts out there in written form.  Even if they’re not the stories I want to write, at least I’ll be writing.

That’s just the quick and dirty on the situation currently.  So, we’ll see just how this process and this site evolves.
