I’ve spent quite a bit of time with the Resident Evil 2 remake over the past week, and I am pleased to report that it is an absolutely amazing game. Having been a massive fan of the original (the first RE game I played, in fact), I can say with all honesty that I am totally pleased with how this remake came out.
Well, aside from that one thing…
But, as far as the game itself, the core story is there, with only a few minor changes throughout. Sherry and Ada’s segments are completely different, and this is definitely for the better. A puzzle or two is gone, but the flow of the game would probably suffer for including it. Annette Birkin is a lot less of a horrible person in Claire’s playthroughs. Hunk is still an utter badass.
Gameplay-wise, the experience is so much smoother without the tank controls. Running, maneuvering, and shooting feel amazing. The guns each handle differently and feel right when they shoot. Granted, the zombies are very bullet-spongey in pretty much all cases, but that isn’t a detriment; no, this makes them so much more threatening and terrifying. And Mr. X…this guy is like the damn Energizer bunny in that he just keeps going and going and going. When you first encounter him, he proves that he’s a massive badass, and remains so throughout the game as he stalks you all over the place. When you start hearing those big footsteps, be very careful. He will ruin your day. Definitely seeing a lot of Nemesis in this guy this time around.
I will admit that I’ve had a few graphical glitches, mainly textures that remain low res for a little too long up close and pop in after a few seconds, but that might be my driver possibly being out of date. Aside from that, I never experienced any kind of glitches or gameplay issues throughout all 4 of my story runs and my runs with Hunk. They game is super stable and runs super smooth on my current rig, and it’s starting to show it’s age. I’m fairly certain that I experienced a pretty big graphical glitch at the end of my last playthorugh (Claire B) when, during the ending vid, the characters seemed to be walking through a foggy wasteland, no landscape or anything rendering. It was kind of a cool effect, but I specifically remember it being bright and having landscape during the Leon B ending. I’ll be replaying it a few more times for sure, so not a huge problem. (From what I’ve been reading, a lot of problems relate to Windows 10, and I’m still running 7, so I may not see a lot of these issues).
Not going to waste too much of your time with a massive, in depth review here. I’ll just give the Resident Evil 2 Remake my most enthusiastic recommendation, and suggest that you dive into the horror and give the game a try. If you enjoy a good survival horror game, then you can’t go wrong with this one.
Until next time…Urban out!
